The Negro National League began play in 1920 with teams primarily in the Midwest. The major teams on the East Coast did not formally organize until 1923 with the formation of the Eastern Colored League. Following the 1921 NNL season, the NNL champion Chicago American Giants (CAG) traveled to the East Coast and faced off with the Hilldale Club (HIL), headquarted in Darby, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia, who were widely considered to be the best team in the East. The Hilldale Club prevailed in the best-of-five series, 3 games to 2 with one tie.
