The St. Louis Stars (SSN) won the first-half championship of the Negro National League in 1928 to earn the team's first playoff berth. Their opponent was second-half champion, the Chicago American Giants (CAG), who were the two-time defending Negro League World Series champions. The Stars upset the American Giants, 5 games to 4, to win their first Negro National League pennant.
The 1928 season was the final season played by the Eastern Colored League, which did not complete its season, so no Negro League World Series was played.
