Interracial Baseball Games: 1934

Game accounts for two sets of interracial contests are included here for 1934.

First, Dizzy and Paul Dean, fresh off of a combined 49 regular-season wins and a World Series championship, barnstormed through the East and Midwest. They did not necessarily have a complete barnstorming "team", often hooking up with local teams for these competitions, such as the Brooklyn Bushwicks (BKB) and Chicago Mills (CHM). For other games, they are simply referred to here as the Dizzy Dean All Stars (ASD). Their competition mostly consisted of existing Negro League teams, including the Kansas City Monarchs (KCM), Pittsburgh Crawfords (PTC), and New York Black Yankees (NY5). In at least one game, however, their opposition was a mix of Negro League stars (NNS). We are aware of at least six games played between a white team headlined by the Dean brothers and a Negro League team. We have found box scores for four of these games.

The other set of interracial games here were played as part of the California Winter League. A Negro League All-Star team organized by Tom Wilson, owner of the Nashville Elite Giants, participated in this league. This team was alternately referred to in the press as either the "Royal Giants" - a reference to the Philadelphia Royal Giants, a long-time Negro League barnstorming team with no known connection to Philadelphia - or the "Elite Giants", in reference to Wilson's Nashville Elite Giants. This team is referred to here as the Philadelphia Royal Giants (PRG) as their roster differed considerably from the regular-season roster of the Nashville Elite Giants (NSH). Their white opponents in the California Winter League included Joe Pirrone's All Stars (PIR) and the White Kings (WHK).

In addition to these two sets of games, the Baltimore Black Sox also played a team that was touted as "All Stars" in the local press. These games were not included here as the overall quality of the teams was not necessarily "major league".
