Working back in time, as Retrosheet typically does, we arrive at 1935 having worked through the 1940s and late 1930s. Going in this direction, 1935 is the start of a string of seasons with significantly more interracial barnstorming contests than the seasons that would follow. For 1935, we have found box scores for fifteen interracial games involving primarily players of major-league caliber.
There are four primary sets of interracial games covered here, all of which took place in the month of October 1935.
First, Dizzy Dean barnstormed with several other major-league players. Dean's teams (ASD) played both regular Negro League teams (e.g., the Kansas City Monarchs - KCM below - and Pittsburgh Crawfords - PTC) as well as All-Star teams (NNS). Dean's teams typically included a few local players. Depending on the locality and how many such players played, some of these games did not necessarily rise to the level of "major-league" games and are not included here. On one occasion, Dean's team is identified as the Shroyers (SHR), a local team in Dayton which included several former major-leaguers. Box scores are presented here for five games in which one or both Dean brothers pitched (including one in Los Angeles against the Philadelphia Royal Giants). Play-by-play accounts have been deduced from newspaper stories for two of these games.
A second white major-league barnstorming team (MLS) headlined by three members of the World Champion Detroit Tigers - Charlie Gehringer, Tommy Bridges, and Schoolboy Rowe - followed a similar schedule, playing mostly the same teams as Dean's All-Stars. This team also followed the pattern of sometimes supplementing their team with non-major leaguers leading some of their games to also not be included here. Box scores for three games by this team are included here. A play-by-play account has been deduced from newspaper stories for one of these games.
The California Winter League had its usual collection of Negro Leaguers - called the Philadelphia Royal Giants (PRG) - as well as white players from the AL, NL, and PCL. The most prominent white team in the California Winter League was organized by Joe Pirrone (PIR). We have box scores for three games played between these two teams.
Finally, a team of American League All-Stars (ALS), headlined by Jimmie Foxx and Rogers Hornsby, traveled to Mexico City where they played several Mexican League teams but also played a three-game series against the Negro National League champion Pittsburgh Crawfords (PTC). Play-by-play accounts of the first and third game of this series were found in a Mexico City newspaper.
There is one additional game included here which does not fit into any of the previous four groups (and which was played in late September). Babe Ruth, who had retired earlier in the 1935 season, put together an "All-Star" team (BRS) of mostly former major-league players and played a doubleheader against the New York Cubans (NY6). We have a box score for game one only.
