The 1939 season saw intra-league playoffs in two major Negro Leagues for the first time. In the Negro American League, the first-half winning Kansas City Monarchs (KCM) played the second-half champion St. Louis Stars (SSA) in a best-of-seven series. While the Negro National League had a two-round playoff series between the top four teams that season: the Baltimore Elite Giants (BLG), Homestead Grays (HOM), Newark Eagles (NW2), and Philadelphia Stars (PH5).
