The 1944 Negro League World Series was a rematch of the 1943 World Series between the Homestead Grays (HOM) of the Negro National League and the Birmingham Black Barons (BIR) of the Negro American League.
Five Birmingham players were seriously injured in a car accident two weeks before the World Series. Artie Wilson and John Britton played in the series despite their injuries. Newspaper accounts of the World Series indicated that Britton was bandaged over his left eye and right wrist while Wilson had both wrists bandaged. Pepper Bassett, Tommy Sampson, and Leandy Young were too injured to play. The short-handed Black Barons were allowed to add local player Collins Jones to their World Series roster.
The Grays and Black Barons played four exhibition games following the conclusion of the World Series. Box scores have been found for three of these four games and are shown below. Play-by-play accounts have only been deduced for the five official World Series games.
