Full play-by-play data, including some deduced games, have been released for all seasons from 1917-2023 as well as for 1912. We have completed deductions for the 1915 and 1916 seasons, which will be released some time this summer. Thanks to Rod Wood for heading up this work.
We have also made considerable progress this year on efforts to more fully document fielding credits, particularly for games for which we are missing some fielding credits within our play-by-play accounts. I expect the fruits of this project to be part of this summer's release. Thanks to Rob Wood, Mike Grahek, and Jay Wigley for their help in improving the fielding data in our event files.
Work continues - slowly - on the 19th century. My cautious optimism that we might have an initial release last fall was premature as other things took precedent. Hopefully this can be the year that we make our first official foray into that century.
Work on the Negro Leagues also continues - also more slowly than I would like. We just released the 1939 and 1949 seasons. I have decided to attempt to deduce as many play-by-play accounts as possible. Our most recent release saw the results of this effort for the 1939, 1948, and 1949 seasons. Thanks to Dave Smith for helping with some of these deductions.
I had the great honor to serve on MLB's Negro Leagues Statistical Review Committee, along with Tom Shieber (among others), and was very pleased with the initial results which were announced several weeks ago. That work will continue. The Committee expressed a desire to add game logs as part of a potential "version 2.0" release. I think this will lead to a more prominent role for Retrosheet's data to be incorporated into the official record and more highly publicized.
Work also continues on a project that I mentioned last year to work on some improvements to the website. I have a team of volunteers working on that project which we hope will begin to show some results before the end of the year. Thanks to Mike Emeigh, Tyler Ault, and Joe Callahan for spearheading this project. Thanks, also, to Joe Callahan for taking over the late Tom Ruane's role in generating the vast majority of Retrosheet's website. This summer's release will be his third release.
I look forward to another busy year. Thank you all for your trust in my leadership and in helping to continue to push Retrosheet forward.
