Unusual Ballpark Features That Affect Balls in Play



PETCO Park, San Diego - The key physical feature in this park is the Western Metal Supply Company building, which was integrated into the park. The southeast corner of the building has a vertical yellow stripe which is the left field pole (see photo 1). Any ball that strikes the pole or to the right of the pole is a home run. Any ball that strikes to the left of the pole is a foul ball. Any ball that strikes any of the balconies to the right of the pole is a home run (see photo 2). Note that the metal strip that is attached to the corner of the building is painted yellow in fair territory and brown in foul territory. This is clearly seen in photo 2.
