Pitchers with 0 BFP, 0 IP

Retrosheet user Mike Emeigh has compiled a list of pitchers who were announced into a game as a pitcher but ended up recording no outs (0 IP) and facing no batters (0 BFP).

Some of these pitchers never threw even one pitch. Since 1976, such appearances count as "games played" but not as "games pitched". Prior to 1976, a pitcher got credit for a "game pitched" merely by virtue of being announced into the game.

Mike's list also includes some pitchers who were on the field for "events" but not events that generated plate appearances - e.g., caught stealing, wild pitch. And it even includes a few pitchers who actually did complete a plate appearance, but credit for the "batter faced" reverted to the previous pitcher (if a pitcher enters the game with two or three balls on the batter and behind in the count and the batter ends up walking, the walk is charged to the previous pitcher).

Mike's list of pitchers who faced no batters and recorded no outs in an "appearance" can be found here: Google Doc

Enjoy!
